Game one was against Norcross’s Premier team. In a game that went back and forth the girls got off to a great start with a 2-0 lead only to have Norcross score making the score 2-1. Just before half time the girls fought back and scored giving them a 3-1 half time lead. The second half was the same tight back and forth game as the first half. Norcross scored first to make it 3-2 with our girls fighting back to score to make it a 4-2 game. After giving up a goal on a penalty kick and with the score 4-3 the girls again rallied back to score a 5th goal to put the game away.

Game 2 was against AFC Lightning’s top team. A very tight first half ended with our girls up 1-0. In the 2nd half the girls played their best soccer of the weekend, the girls moved the ball well and played as a team scoring 3 unanswered goals to make the score 4-0. After giving up a goal on a penalty kick and on a breakaway the score was 4-2 and Lightning was pressing to get another goal. The Elite girls responded by scoring again to put the game out of reach 5-2.
 
Game 3 against the Atlanta Fire Silver team was another tight game that they needed to win to secure a spot in the finals. The girls fought back from a half time 1-1 score to put the game away with 3 unanswered goals in the second half to win 4-1.
 
The finals were against The Atlanta Fire Gold, one of the top ranked U-10 girl’s team in the state. The Fire Gold team had averaged 11 goals a game in this tournament. Our girls fought hard the entire game and never gave up but in the end the Fire team was just too strong and won 7-0.
The experience this weekend will only serve to make the girls more determined then ever and they are looking forward to a rematch with the Fire at the end of the season.

As referees blew their whistles to begin the first games of the spring soccer season, officials of a different kind held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Soccer Complex at Mt. Carmel Park in Hampton.  The Henry County Board of Commissioners, together with the SPLOST Department and members of the Henry County Soccer Association, including a few players, all participated in the ceremony.

Thanks to SPLOST III, which funded the construction of the facility, the day marked the first time all 1,500 youth participating in the program could play their games in the same location. 

“Having everybody in one facility is outstanding,” exclaimed Doug Stevenson, President of the Henry County Soccer Association.  “We have so many parents that have kids in different age brackets.  Before we had to go to two different parks.  They would have one here and one over at the old soccer complex, and it was tough for those parents even just on practice nights, getting kids back and forth.  To have everybody under one roof is unbelievable.  A lot of parents are very happy about that.”

The expansion project involved the addition of ten new fields, making the Mt. Carmel Soccer Complex the largest in the state, with a total of 14 fields.  To make grassing the 43-acre facility more cost-effective, contractors used a relatively new method called “sprigging,” which essentially sprays small pieces of sod over the fields, enabling them to use just 20% of the sod that the more traditional method would have required – reducing the number of pallets needed from 730 to just 146.  The project also involved an additional concession stand  which includes bathrooms, a meeting room, and space for athletic storage.  The fields are lit for evening practices, and meandering sidewalks make accessing the back fields easier, especially for those wheeling strollers or toting coolers.  A new parking lot provides 400 additional spaces, and an overflow parking lot provides room for another 400 vehicles to use during tournaments. 

“Having this many fields in one location makes this a great tournament facility,” explained Stevenson.  “Our tournament that we host in late May,  last year we had to split it between four locations and still sold over 600 hotel rooms, so it brings a lot of people into the county.  With this facility, now we will be able to host more than just one tournament a year, at one location, and continue to bring those people back to the county.”

The SPLOST III project was designed by Falcon Design Consultants, LLC in conjunction with Moss Developments.  It was constructed by The Potts Co. in conjunction with Adams Brothers Partnership, LLC.  The total cost of the 43-acre project to date is $2,122,380.51.

“Providing facilities for our children to play and participate in sports is very important, but we could not have built this facility were it not for the SPLOST III program,” said District II Commissioner Fred Auletta. “We now have a top notch facility that will enable us to bring tourism revenue into our economy.  It is as much an investment in our future as it is an investment in our children.”

The former soccer complex on Henry Parkway will be converted to four baseball fields, one of which will be for high school age youth.  This will provide older youth with another opportunity to stay involved in sports.  The fields are expected to be ready this summer in time for the USSSA Regional and State Tournaments.
